“Engi Vengi” is yet another musical proposal of the Great Choir of Young CHOREA. The group was established in 2011. Since then, it has accompanied the musical performances of the CHOREA Theatre, collecting and arranging songs from all over the world. This time we are going to draw on the Balkan musical repertoire. During the concert, we are going to perform, among others, traditional Bulgarian songs from western Bulgaria and the Rhodope Mountains. The concert will not lack Macedonian accents. We are going to hear some polyphony and dissonance, songs which are flirtatious as well as wistful, and above all, a great richness of ornaments and uneven rhythms.

The Great Choir of Young CHOREA is a musical and vocal band which was founded in the summer of 2011 by the CHOREA Theatre in Lodz. This is a group of music enthusiasts, who differ in age, experience, interests and backgrounds, but they share one great common passion for music and singing. The Choir has participated in many artistic projects organized by the CHOREA Theatre.

CHOREA Theatre and Stichting Caucasus Foundation in Tbilisi, Georgia present program of Chorea’s concerts and workshops in 2016 in Georgia.

International theatre workshops "Body / Movement / Voice – The Multidimensional actor"

The workshop organized by CHOREA is based on intensive acting training. The workshop focuses on waking up the “organicity” of an actor, by working with body, dynamic movement, voice, musicality, rhythm, and on applying all these means of expression simultaneously into a singular, complete artistic act. The workshop will be also inspired by the concept of collective actor, based on intensive work with partner, and multidimensional - polyrhythmic and polyphonic - ways of working with the group.

"Concert of Ancient Music"

Musical direction: Tomasz Krzyżanowski
Cast: Joanna Chmielecka, Hubert Domański, Sandra Gierzek, Dominika Jarosz, Joanna Kłos, Dominika Krzyżanowska, Tomasz Krzyżanowski, Maciej Maciaszek, Tomasz Rodowicz, Elina Toneva
Duration: 60 min., no intermissions

CHOREA artists create a spectacular concert of ancient music. Broken, odd rhythms and polyphonic chants, reconstructed from twenty five hundred years old inscriptions on papyrus and stone, are vibrating with modern, dynamic energy. We have tried to interpret this ancient musical material and compositions with reference to very rich Balkan musical tradition, and currently we tend to be drifting towards jazz, oriental sounds and contemporary music. Inspired by the ancient art, we create our own art – deeply modern – created on the clash of unknown, almost lost and forgotten European heritage and contemporary language of sounds.

4th of June, at 5 pm in Music and Drama Theatre, www.musictheatre.ge, Tbilisi
6th of June, at 8 pm in New Stage of Batumi Drama Theatre, www.musictheatre.ge, Batumi
7th of June, at 5 pm in Drama Theatre, Khulo

Production: Dominika Krzyżanowska, Tomasz Krzyżanowski

In this musical “mosaicon”, we will hear the Persian temperament, Turkish Orient, Akkadian mystery, Old Greek pathos, Elvish magic, Polish word-games and others. This time, we wanted to find in the rhythm and sound of languages everything that can move and directly touch human sensitivity. We have been searching for the possibility to open, both in the performer and the listener, the new perspective of time, perception and awareness.

In the fall 2016 we will show a music performance created by 50 perfromers: children, parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends. Preperations to the performance will take form of family workshop meetings. At the beginning we will create our own drumsticks, made of different materials, which will give us various sound quality. Then we will start building our „Pots and Pans Orchestra”. We will prepare instruments for each Orchestra musician. We will create a music score, and then we will perform a musical piece written for 50 pots, pans, buckets, saucepans, skillets, and other instuments. We will learn about simple and a little more complex rhythm structures. We will experiment and improvise. The main idea of our work and the final concert is to spend a lot of creative, intergenerational, family time together in pleasent, curious, harmonious and resonant action.

"Szczelina" / 'The Crack' is a performance created by CHOREA Theatre, based on the text of Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre, translated by Elizabeth Frątczak-Nowotny, and fragments of poetic texts written by Rumi.
This is not a performance about refugees who have suddenly lost the roofs over their heads and they have to move into the unknown. This is not a performance about those who do not know where they are going, they just know where they came from. This is not a performance about people who have lost their loved ones, but they still want to live. This is not a performance about those who are losing everything, but they still have hope, that they will be able to start their lives anew.
'The Crack' is a performance about You - about us - who have roofs over our heads and plenty food to eat, and we still do not realize that we can lose it all, at any moment. That suddenly we can be thrown into the unknown, just because someone, without warning, might drop a bomb on our town, or poison our water, or decide that we do not have any rights to live in our city anymore. This performance is about our fears and about finding hope. And about the fact, that each one of us is, was or one day will be a refugee, usually not by his own choice.
We are reading newspapers and watching news every day. At times we feel like wanting to escape to a Noah's ark, or at least to Nepal. But thanks to the work on this performance we have created a chance to feel less helpless. (this may sound terribly naive, but that is how I feel). Maybe that's because the struggle with our own helplessness begins form talking about it and not turning our eyes away from what is happening. We are looking for a crack and a stream of light which could shine through it, and for a chance to reach the other side of despair.
Six women and one man are trying to tell, through words, movement and singing, very ordinary stories of people who have lost everything, and have nothing left but hope. Hope, which sometimes turns into a survival instinct, and sometimes into an acceptance of loosing it.
I hope that, thanks to our performance, despite day to day growing aggression and fear against the OTHERS, we will be able to see people in them. People like us. When the demons will be gone, maybe then we will begin to talk...

"DERBY.Białoczerwoni" na Festiwalu Łódź 4 Kultur

'DERBY.White-and-red' on Festival 'Łódź 4 Kultur'

3 Tymienieckiego Street

Performance „DERBY.White-and-red” by CHOREA Theatre in terms of Festival 'Łódź 4 Kultur'

date: 30.05.2016
hour: 21:00
place: courtyard on 3 Tymienieckiego Street
admission is free

The main theme of performance "DERBY.White-and-red" is an attempt to define the identity of the accursed social groups of our city. The performance tells the story of Lodz and those who were born here. It's the story of the city cut in half. "Derby.White-and-Red" is a tale of two football fan tribes living in Lodz, about their spiritual struggles and social frustrations, their ethos and personal pride, the specific patriotism and cursed heroes. But not only about that. In our performance the journalist sensation turns into a romantic drama, and sport report into metaphorical parable. We can see the signs of this endless war on the walls in each town in our country. We assume that these club signs painted on the walls are made by some aggressive, demonic hooligans. But these signs, using patriotic polish uprising symbols or the Star of David contain forces, fears and hopes of the community, reaching much further and deeper in space and in time then just here and now. Therefore this performance is a symbolic attempt of overpassing the divisions, and a real attempt of looking over the other side of a wall. We will try to understand the people who we are afraid to know, and who create the identity and spirit of Lodz.

Lodz 4 Cultures Festival is an annual event, artistic and social, referring to the founding history of Lodz: city built by hands of Germans, Jews, Russians and Poles. It became the fastest growing metropolis in Europe in the late XIX century. The source of success were people. They were always willing to assimilate successive waves of immigrants and had ability to solve problems despite all differences national and religious. It is no coincidence; the city of Lodz was called European New York.

Lodz 4 Cultures Festival is a continuation of the festival created by Witold Knychalski in 2002. The context of designated intentions of the creator was a tragic finale of the multicultural society – extermination of the Jews, Germans escape. All those events, led to the invasion of Poland in 1939, ruled by Nazi Germany. The main idea is to promote an attitude based on openness to other people and their cultures.

The festival would also be a way of revitalizing neglected historical center of the city, through art. Most of the festival events, take place in the public space: on stages located on Lodz backyards, streets and squares, in parks and palaces gardens, creating a special atmosphere of these places and reveals its forgotten beauty. Above all, the festival is a celebration of the city, presenting outstanding artistic events from different fields of artistry – music, theatre, film and fine arts. It is all directed to a large and diverse local and nationwide audience.

The project is an attempt to answer the question of what seeing is and what it is not. Do we realize the meaning of the sense of sight? By confronting the visually-impaired with the sighted, we are trying to develop alternative techniques of work, that will cross the physical limitations. We use the synergy of impulses – words, sounds, touch, movement – to create our own language for communication. We are learning to see with our whole bodies, and discover the world based on a different kind of seeing, which does not have to be limited by a physical impairment or the blindness of the mind, or by stereotypical judgments. This kind of work in theatre lets us go beyond the borders which the society puts in front of us in our everyday lives. Theatre becomes a medium, in which differences between us become a tool for creating the reality together. Visual impairment does not need to mean life in the dark. And how do you see it?
