Edinburgh
On 25-29 August a few people from our Take Over Youth Board, together with the coordinators of TAKE OVER Project will visit Edinburgh at Fringe Festival, one of the most important and certainly the most interesting theater event in the world.
The British Council’s biennial Edinburgh Showcase is the single biggest opportunity for UK theatre companies to introduce their work to international promoters. The programme comprises new work that represents the very best of contemporary theatre and dance, reflecting the breadth and diversity of British performing arts. Since the British Council’s first Showcase in 1997 the event has given 350 theatre and dance companies the opportunity to tour overseas, building new relationships and opening up new markets for the UK’s performing arts.
Check out our report form the Festival, available on September on: www.takeover.chorea.com.pl

"Gilgamesh" composed by Tomasz Krzyzanowski performed by CHOREA Theatre is a unique and original reading of one of the oldest surviving epic poems. This is the first full musical adaptation of the “Epic of Gilgamesh” inspired by the sound of forgotten Akkadian language and mysterious culture of Ancient Sumer.
During the concert, the audience can listen to a story of the legendary king – Gilgamesh, and his search of the secret of immortality. Vocal parts in original Akkadian language, based on the ancient texts written in cuneiform on stone tablets from the second century B.C., alternate with songs in Polish translation. In the musical layer, elements of contemporary music come together with elements of musical traditions from Middle and Far East. Polyphonic compositions give new life to mythical images, and transfer us into a distant, forgotten world full of still valid and important questions and emotions.

CHOREA artists create a spectacular concert of ancient music. Broken, odd rhythms and polyphonic chants, reconstructed from twenty five hundred years old inscriptions on papyrus and stone, are vibrating with modern, dynamic energy. The singers, dancers and musicians work hand in hand, and they are fluently taking each others' places in turns.
We have tried to interpret this ancient musical material and compositions with reference to very rich Balkan musical tradition, and currently we tend to be drifting towards jazz, oriental sounds and contemporary music. Inspired by the ancient art, we create our own art – deeply modern – created on the clash of unknown, almost lost and forgotten European heritage and contemporary language of sounds.
